This is a critical moment for South Australia. It is now up to all of us, government, services, and community, to turn its recommendations into meaningful change for children and young people.
On the day The Silence and Inaction report was released, we met with Minister Katrine Hildyard MP to discuss the need for children and young people, especially Aboriginal children and young people, to be at the centre of the reforms. That commitment stands today. We will continue to work with Commissioner Stott Despoja AO and the sector and walk alongside the Minister and the South Australian Government to ensure the Royal Commission’s recommendations are implemented in ways that deliver real and lasting safety.
Quote from Mimi Crowe, Acting Commissioner for Children and Young People:
“Domestic, family and sexual violence has a profound impact on children and young people’s safety, wellbeing and futures. This report must lead to action that makes them safer and ensures their experiences and solutions shape the reforms that follow.”
Quote from Dale Agius, Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People:
“For Aboriginal children and young people, the impacts of domestic, family and sexual violence are compounded by intergenerational trauma and systemic inequities. Their voices and culture must be central to every solution. Today is our opportunity to act in ways that protect, heal and strengthen families.”
Joint Quote – Mimi Crowe & Dale Agius:
“This report is a chance to deliver real, lasting change. Children and young people, especially Aboriginal children, must be at the centre of every recommendation so that the reforms that follow are shaped by their voices, their experiences and their solutions. We will work in partnership with the South Australian Government to make that happen.”
